Brim Fly

Pattern Developed by: Unknown at this time

Hook: Size 6 or 8 Mustad 3366
Thread: 3/0 Monocord
Legs: Regular Rubber, 2 sets
Wing: Squirrell or calf tail
Body: Medium Chenille

I don't know where I found this fly, but it is a great brim fly, hence the name. I prefer it tied with fluorescent yellow chenille body, fluorescent yellow rubber legs, and a white calf tail wing. I have also used this fly in fluorescent red, as well as black, white, or yellow with a gray squirrel tail wing. Even though this fly is quite durable, there have been times when we caught so many bluegills on it that they literally wore it out.

Use a strip of medium rubber thread 2 strands wide. Leave the two strands connected as one until the fly is finished. Cut two pieces 1 1/2" - 1 3/4" inch length. Tie one in on each side at the center of the hook by looping it around the thread. Stretch and wind the rubber legs down over the center third of the hook shank. Tie in the chenille at the back, wind it forward around the legs, and tie it off at the head. Tie in the wing with 6 - 8 wraps of thread just behind the eye of the hook, and trim the butt ends. The tip of the wing should extend to just behind the bend of the hook. Use your thumbnail to push the wraps of thread holding the wing back slightly to clear the eye. Then, using your thumbnail, press down on top of the wing to cause it to flare out to the sides. Tie off, cement, and separate the rubber legs.
